What “hit the road, dude” means

“Hit the road” is a long-standing English idiom for leaving, or for setting off on a journey. Add “dude” and it turns into a brush-off: not “please leave” but “get lost, man”. That is exactly how the driver uses it. He does not argue about the pond; he repeats “state?” like he cannot believe what he heard, and dismisses the fishermen in four words.

Online the line now does the same job anywhere someone guards their turf: the last slice of pizza, a parking spot, the good side of the couch. The joke is the gap between how small the territory is and how seriously its owner takes it.

Where the meme comes from

The source is a phone video posted to TikTok on August 21, 2025. Two people are fishing at a pond when an older man with a mustache pulls up in a white pickup and wants to know who told them they could fish there. They say they thought it was state property. The footage is real, not staged and not AI.

The man in the truck is a private person, not a celebrity or an actor, so this guide does not name or picture him, and neither does our generator.

The hit the road dude script

Transcripts differ a little between reposts, but these are the lines everyone captions and quotes:

  • “Who told you to fish here?”
  • “I thought it was state property.”
  • “State?”
  • “Hit the road, dude. This ain’t state property, this is private property.”
  • “Lock ’em up.”
  • “What’s your name? I want your name.”

You will also see “this ain’t no state property” and “this here is private property”. Both are the same line heard two ways.

Why it is funny

The beats are short enough to remix: a confident question, a baffled “State?”, then a flat dismissal. The driver never raises his voice into a rant; he just will not entertain the idea that the pond might be public. Swap the pond for anything someone guards and the template still works, which is why it spread so well as a sound.

The “Lock ’Em Up” line

After “hit the road, dude”, the driver goes one step further and starts talking about having the fishermen locked up. That escalation from “leave” to “lock ’em up” is why the same clip is also known as the Lock ’Em Up meme, and why some edits cut straight to it.

It has nothing to do with the political “lock her up” or “lock him up” chants; the overlap in search results is only the wording. In this meme, “lock ’em up” is the moment the grumpy landowner takes a fishing trip far too seriously.

How it spread, from GIF to AI cat

  • August–September 2025: lip-sync remakes on TikTok within days, and a green-screen cutout of the driver that people dropped into other videos.
  • October 2025: a standalone “Hit The Road Dude” GIF and stickers, which is where most reaction posts still come from.
  • October 2026: the AI wave. Character swaps put a cat, a Minecraft boat, a Skyrim Khajiit, a wizard and even outer space (“Space? Space property?”) into the clip. The orange tabby cat in the driver’s seat is the version that stuck.

That is why the meme now has two lives: the original sound and GIF, and the AI version, where anyone, or anyone’s pet, can be the one saying “hit the road, dude”.

One meme, four names

  • Hit the Road Dude: the catchphrase, and the most searched name.
  • State Property: from the driver’s disbelieving “State?”.
  • This Is Private Property: the line that settles the argument.
  • Lock ’Em Up: the escalation at the end.

Make your own version

The AI version is the easiest way in: the Hit the Road Dude AI generator recreates the cat clip with one photo of you, a friend who agreed, or your pet in the driver’s seat, original audio included. The extended 30-second version ends with the driver writing the fisherman’s name on a notepad. The step-by-step guide walks through it, and the sound guide covers using the audio on TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
